UFM | 2016 | COLLABORATION WITH CIZEL ZEA + ESTEFANÍA MIRALLES

The international organization CRI helps families in the rural areas of Chimaltenango, located approximately 50 kilometers west of Guatemala City. The houses usually cover the family’s basic needs, yet the design does not meet the context and cultural needs. Therefore, a new home was designed based on its context and culture, emphasized in the community of El Durazno. After thorough research, site visits, and a participatory process with members of the community, a 35m² home was designed with an independent compost latrine. A guided manual and budget were also produced, making it easier for families to adapt and change elements of the home according to their specific needs.

The kitchen and porch areas are of great importance in the homes since it is where the families spend most of their time. The porch serves as a multifunctional space, adapting for leisure activities or income generating functions to accommodate a family business.

The modular double skin façade is located to the south, which is most critical. the bamboo placed in between the corrugated steel panels acts as insulation and protects the bedrooms from extreme temperatures.
