VOLCANIC EVOLUTION STUDY
MBLANDARCH | ETSAB | 2023

For the course Expression of Landscape in the ETSAB´s Master in Landscape Architecture, we explored ways to graphically represent the passing of time. The case of study chosen was Guatemala's Volcán de Pacaya. It is located approximately 45 km south of the city, and is one of the three active volcanoes in the country. Through observing and drawing satellite images, the volcanic activity reveals itself as does the vegetation that through time has grown on the volcanic rocks and ashes, as well as the different craters that are part of the volcanic complex. The west flank of the volcano has had major recent activity, the ashes and rocks are still visible. Meanwhile on the east flank, different soil strata are visible, as well as vegetation varying density, be it grass, shrubs or trees such as conifers, revealing the prehistoric volcanic activity.
